Staying hydrated is essential for our residents, especially during this ridiculously hot summer in Delta. Our team has come up with ways to encourage fluids without the monotonous “drink water”.
We serve ice cream, popsicles, water, and lemonade on our hydration carts. Our managers make their rounds with the hydration carts several times a day as a gentle reminder. Education is also key to staying hydrated.
Unfortunately, coffee, soda, drinks with high sodium and drinks with high caffeine content can all dehydrate our bodies. We know how much our residents love their coffee, but it might be worth a shot to try our decaffeinated coffee. As we age, dehydration can lead to severe complications including UTI’s, falls with major injuries, and decreased kidney function.
I challenge all of our residents, families and staff to drink 6-8 glasses of water every day to stay safe and healthy!
